Furniture & textile collections document housing and fashion culture from the Gothic style to the contemporary industrial design, while they also contain several quite rare specimens. Of significance are also the local masters' top quality works. The collection of metal items (tableware, cutlery, bells) has been created mostly from specimens found on the territory of Croatia, ranging from the Gothic period until the present day. Particularly valuable are the units encompassing local goldsmith's products from Zagreb and Varazdin, as well as wrought iron objects. The Museum's holdings, encompassing the entire development of ceramic objects (pottery, faiance, china, stone-ware, etc.), include, among other things, china items from the European production centres, European faience, Croatia's own workshops production, while they also include a unique collection of local ceramists' works between the two World Wars, as well as of those by contemporary artists. The collection of Baroque polychrome and gilt sculptures; the paintings and miniatures collections are among the most comprehensive in the country. The glass collection encompasses a very high number of objects from antiquity through Renaissance to contemporary art, thus representing the style and technological development of both European and local production. Photographs collection has extremely rich holdings, parts of which date back to the period before WWI. The Museum has recently established collections encompassing the following: Architectural items, clocks and watches, graphic & product design. The holdings' expansion is owed to major donations, such as: Penic, Zaplaz, Akacic, Ibler, Urlich, Pichler, Krizman, Maric, Matkovic-Majer and Vinski. The library, which was also founded in 1880, is extremely rich as well, encompassing over 50,000 items. The Museum organizes very many exhibitions. Its permanent exhibition was re-opened in 1995. |
