This particular department of the Museum of Slavonia has been established towards the 40's owing to the efforts of the then librarian Prof. Ivan Medved. He contributed to the holdings himself by collecting papers, posters, invitation cards, and small print associated mostly with Osijek. As of 1996, the Department has been moved to a new location, to the 7th bastion, not far from the Museum's main building. Storage rooms, user premises and permanent collection are scheduled to be rearranged in the course of 1997.

The department consists of several collections.

The paper collection includes over 200 items, the most significant among them being Osijek editions (the first local paper "Der Volksredner für Vaterland und Gesetz" from 1848; "Esseker Lokalblatt und Landbote" from 1864; "Die Drau" from 1868, which was published until the 30's; "National Defense" 1902-1933; "Croatian Bulletin" 1920-1945). The collection is used very often for research purposes. It has to a large extent been processed and entered into the Alphabetic Catalogue. A part of the papers has been bound, while the first issues have been laminated. In the very near future, they should be transferred to a microfilm or a CD, thus largely facilitating their use and ensuring protecion of the originals.

The press clippings collection includes several thousand clippings per thematic groups, most of which are associated with Osijek.

The poster collection includes 1,000 items, some of which have a remarkable value, since they were printed in Osijek towards the beginning of the 19th c. They have been classified per topics and per publishers. The holdings are mostly associated with the native collection.

The small print collection has a strictly local character. It includes almost a thousand leaflets, invitation cards, menus, and notices of death. The colection has not been fully processed yet, and has, for the time being, been only roughly classified.

The calendars collection includes calendars shaped as books, wall calendars, sheet calendars. The holdings consist of over 300 items, associated mostly with Osijek and Slavonia. It has been classified as per titles, both alphabetically and chronologically.

This department's holdings are often used in exhibitions as additional materials, as well as an inexhaustible source for the research of mostly local past. They are now about to undergo a long and complex procedure of processing, inventorying, and protection at a new location.
