The ethnographic department was established in 1952 as a part of the Museum complex. It then included promotional ethnographic materials, such as little dolls in folk costumes, kerchiefs -parts of folk costumes embroidered in gold and worn by married women that most probably used to belong to the Croatian Women Society members - and furniture decorated by ornaments typical for zucchini decoration (a famous local custom). It also includes a few items of Dinaric origin.
Since the department's establishment, through systematic collection, we have managed to come up with a representative selection of the 19th and 20th century Slavonian and Baranyan traditional culture elements, primarily folk costumes. Clothing and parts of folk costumes constitute the largest part of the ethnographic department holdings. Textile products make a collection apart, with devices for textile making, and a collection of utility textile pieces. The collection associated with rural husbandries includes agricultural tools & machinery, as well as other items. Another collection consists of interior decoration movables, such as furniture. The handicrafts collection consists mostly of wood carvings and decorated zucchini. We should also mention the pottery collection, collection of Easter eggs, and a small collection of musical instruments.
