Ivo Maroević was born in 1937 in Stari Grad, Hvar. He graduated in art history and English at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. His first job was in an elementary school in Grubišino Polje, and then he worked in the Adamec Elementary School, and in the People’s Park in Maksimir, the Sisak Municipal Museum, the Croatian Conservation Institute and finally at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, where he was a full professor of museology at the museology chair.
He carried out many jobs, and was a teacher of English and of visual culture, conservator, director, kept documentation, university professor and vice-dean of the Faculty of Philosophy.
As well as his scholarly writings, he also published in special journals, daily press and weeklies, and his articles were mainly related to daily events in connection with his discipline – museology, research into historical and contemporary town planning and architecture, conservation, restoration.
He took a doctorate in 1971, his subject being: Sisak, City and Architecture. In 1969 be published the book The Present of the Heritage; in 1986, Zagreb by Itself, 1999; Anthology of Zagreb Architecture, 2000; Chronicle of Zagreb Architecture, 1981-2002. In 1993 he published the book Introduction to Museology.
He received a number of prizes and recognitions for his work: the Božidar Adžija Prize; recognition of the Federation of Conservators of Croatia; the Cika Cross; City of Zagreb Prize; Matica Hrvatska Prize for the book War and Heritage in Croatia; and the "Pavao Ritter Vitezović" Prize of the Croatian Museum Association for lifetime achievement.
Professor Maroević died in Zagreb on January 20, 2007, in his 70th year.
