Mirjana Sakač ((Noll-Kulundžić) was born in Osijek in 1935. During WWII, her parents were shot as sympathisers of the Resistance by the Ustashas together with the Jew M. Klein, whom they had tried to protect. She grew up with her childless uncle, went to German language school, and at the end of the war with uncle and aunt (a German woman)) moved to the Tyrol. After 1945, via the Red Cross, her mother’s sister and her husband, Zvonimir Kulundžić, the writer, located her via the Red Cross and had her live in Belgrade with them. She had an interrupted schooling, in various schools and languages.
She graduated high school and in art history at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. In the house of Kulundzić, she was surrounded by books, and this determined her future occupation. As a student, she often travelled around Europe.
In 1960 she was accepted as trainee curator at the Croatian Academy’s Glyptotheque, as manager of the Croatian Historical Monuments Collection. She took part in field research in Split, Trogir and Šibenik. She has produced some 30 exhibitions, and has authored catalogues and forewords.
From 1989 to 2000 during the Homeland War she was director of the Glyptotheque and in this period, for the sake of saving works of art from the holdings of the sculptures of the 19th and 20th century, had a hundred or so sculptures, of which the originals were in plaster, cast again.
While she was director, the Glyptotheque’s roof was renovated, the work of the restoration workshop was improved, the new building in the courtyard was built, the sculpture park put in order, and central heating installed.
For her work she was awarded the Memorial Charter commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bjelovar City Museum and the Order of the Croatian Daystar with Figure of Marko Marulić.
