Marijan Susovski was born in 1943 in Zagreb, where he completed elementary and high schools; he had a high school graduation topic on Impressionism as a base for modern art. He graduated in art history and English from the Faculty of Philosophy in 1968.
As a student he took part in the work of research teams of the Institute for the History of Art along the Adriatic coast, as part of the Southern Adriatic Project, run by Dr Milan Prelog. He did his master’s with a thesis on TV Visual Design in 1983, also at the Faculty of Philosophy of Zagreb University.
He worked as a consultant for the Industrial Design Centre, was business secretary of the Historians of Art Association, and a consultant of Radio Zagreb for fine arts.
From 1972 he was permanently employed in the Gallery of Contemporary Art, City of Zagreb Galleries (now the Museum of Contemporary Art); from 1984 to 1990 he was director of the MCA. He was also manager of the Richter and Seissel Donations Collections, and also took an active part in the work of the museum community, as member of many commissions at the Ministry of Culture, member of AICA, member of the ICOM public relations committee and member of the executive committee of ICOM.
He authored numerous texts in catalogues, dossier studies and exhibitions, wrote forewords for catalogues accompanying exhibitions of foreign and domestic artists.
In his theoretical texts he was concerned with the phenomenon of the new art media, phenomena and trends. He won the Josip Broz Tito Medal of Labour in 1979, and he also on the Order of the Croatian Daystar with Figure of Marko Marulić.
He never managed to complete his doctoral dissertation on Josip Seissel - the Constructivist Period, 1921-1924.
He died in Zagreb on October 20, 2003, in his 61st year.
