The Collection of Photographs holds over 16,000 analog photographs (black and white and color), slides and negatives, and more than 40,000 digital records. The photographs have been systematically collected ever since MDC was founded—during field visits, work on MDC projects, professional trips, and donations.

The holdings date from the early 1930s to the present day. The material includes not only photographs taken by MDC staff, but also by authors like Branko Balić, Antun Bauer, Marija Braut, Zvonimir Buljević, Boris Cvjetanović, Tošo Dabac, Damir Fabijanić, Mladen Grčević, Đuro Griesbach, Miljenko Smokvina, Šime Strikoman, Josip Špralja, Krešimir Tadić, Pavo Urban, Milisav Vesović and Jozo Vranić.

The photographs are divided into several thematic groups: Croatian museums and galleries (buildings, permanent exhibitions, exhibitions, museum objects, activities); MDC (history and activities); museums and their holdings in the war; collectors (portraits and settings); church collections and inventories (architecture and objects); educational activities in museums; international holdings (including material that relates to museums from the former Yugoslavia).
